About Motor Oils or Engine Oils

By: Michael Braganza

The main purpose of lubricants is to lubricate moving parts of moving parts, keep moving parts apart, reduce friction, protect against wear and tear, reduce heat generation and provide overall better & smooth performance. Some biggest users of lubricants are transportation, marine, aerospace, automotive and metalworking industries. A large amount of lubricants like greases, cutting fluids and grinding fluids are used in metalworking industries on regular basis. Such types of lubricants are known as metalworking lubricants. They are also knows as coolants because they make the tasks of metalworking process and reduce heat generation and make them cool.

There are several applications of industrial lubricants. Among them motor oils are considered as the largest application of lubricants. Regularly a large amount of motor oils are being used in vehicles. The main functions of motor oils or engine oils are to protect the internal combustion engines in vehicles and other motor equipments. They also lubricate moving parts of engine, cools the engine by carrying away the heat from the moving parts.

Motor oils are used in heavy automobiles as well as light vehicles. They are also used in ship, aeroplane, train, construction equipments, small & large agricultural equipments. In every engine moving parts at high speeds cause friction and friction generates heat. By using motor oils which make a special film between the moving parts, friction can be reduces. So, Heat can be also reduced. Oils in motor vehicles or in engines not only perform the task of reducing friction between moving parts, they also prevent against corrosion of metal parts, transfer heat, help to seal the high pressure combustion gases inside the cylinders, etc. Thus, we can say that, of all the industrial lubricants motor or engine oils play an important role in automobile industries.

Now-a-days, synthetic motor oils are also being used in motor vehicles and other engines. Motor oils are petroleum based. But Synthetic oils don’t contain petroleum or crude oils. They are artificially synthesized from other chemical compounds to prevent the shortage of petroleum. Synthetic oil is the excellent substitute for petroleum based oil. Also the performance of synthetic oils is well. They are widely used in developing countries. They are a number of reasons to use synthetic motor oils such as, improved overall engine performance, less engine wear, faster starting, low oil consumption, etc. So many big motor companies also recommend synthetic motor oils to use.
