If you have ever lost important data due to a power failure then you will be perfectly aware of how inconvenient and annoying it is, especially if all the work needs to be done by a business deadline. For those of us who have never experienced this problem, just imagine that you have been working on a report or presentation for hours but have forgotten to save it regularly, when all of a sudden the power cuts out and all the data is lost. There are however, ways to avoid this scenario. An Uninterruptible Power Supply or UPS is a device that provides battery backup if electrical power supplies fail. Available in a variety of sizes, smaller UPS devices will provide you with power for a few minutes enabling you to shut down your computer safely, larger UPS devices on the other hand will last for a few hours or until electrical generators take over.

In order for your computer systems to operate effectively the power supply that they are connected to must also remain constant without surges or fluctuations as these can also cause you to lose data or damage your equipment permanently. A UPS can also help maintain a power supply as they are capable of regulating and filtering utility power and can sense if power drops to an unacceptable level.
There are three different types of UPS used for computer systems:
• Offline UPS
This is the simplest type of UPS and is also the least expensive. The primary power for an offline UPS is from the AC line. When the input voltage falls below that of a specified window the UPS will automatically start supplying power via the inverter. Once mains power is restored the inverter is turned off. An offline UPS only provides minimal power protection and can offer no failsafe should the inverter fail.
• Line Interactive UPS
This is perhaps the most popular UPS used today and works very similar to an offline UPS. It is cheaper than online UPS whilst providing better protection than an offline UPS. However, as with offline UPS there will a break in the transfer to and from the battery mode and there is also no failsafe should the battery/inverter fail.
• Online UPS
Online UPS provides the highest level of uninterruptible power supply of any UPS technology and can withstand large fluctuations in input voltage before switching to battery power; this means that there are no unnecessary battery discharges. Online UPS also provides a failsafe if there is a failure within the UPS hardware. Due to the technology used, online UPS usually costs a lot more that other UPS technologies.
