Could Clinton Solve The Problem Of Health Insurance For Individuals With Pre-existing Conditions?

By: Donald Saunders

With the Presidential Election in full swing it is hardly surprising to find that health care and in particular health insurance is high on the agenda and, for thousands of people, the potential for solving the problem of affordable insurance cover for people suffering from pre-existing conditions may make Senator Clinton's proposal an attractive choice. But is it likely to work?

As with the majority of proposals it sounds wonderful and promises new choices for those who currently have health insurance coverage and also for the 47,000,000 US citizens who are currently without any form of insurance. It also promises to cut your premiums and provide you with greater security of cover. For those suffering from pre-existing conditions it also promises to "end discrimination based on pre-existing conditions or expectations of illness".

Hillary's plan to address America's health insurance requirements calls upon insurers to work with both patients and employers to offer a high standard of health care at an affordable price and upon government to reform the health care system to both improve the quality of care and lower costs.

Now of course this is precisely what we all want to see but if it were really that easy why is the health care system in such a mess today and why are costs soaring rather than falling?

The truth is that this is merely the latest in a growing list of plans to sort out the health insurance system and is pie in the sky. In essence it is nothing more than a political plan that is extremely well written and excellently presented and will no doubt to some extent achieve its objective, which is quite simply to win votes. It will not however do anything to improve the health care system because it is simple unworkable.

Health insurance today is big business and has little to do with offering health care and everything to do with making money for the insurance companies. Now you can of course talk to the insurers until you are blue in the face but, unless the government is willing to throw money at the problem then costs are going to continue rising.

Anybody who has experienced private medical care carried out overseas will know very well that much of the cost of providing care at home represents profits for the insurance companies and not the cost of providing care. You need only seek major medical treatment in any of the many superb hospitals in the Far East for example to know that you can get the highest quality of care at a mere fraction of the cost of buying that same care in the US. And if you believe that the standard of care overseas is not as good as it is in the United States then think again because a lot of the hospitals in the Far East are staffed by highly qualified doctors and surgeons and have some of the most modern equipment you will find anywhere in the world.

It is all very well to talk about working with the insurance companies to reduce costs but the simple fact of the matter is that it is far from being in their interests to do so. Costs will stay high and indeed will continue to increase until the US government decides to take over the responsibility for the provision of the mainstay of health care in the US.
