How Did I Get E.D.? And Can Viagra Help Me?

Erectile dysfunction affects most men as they age. Unfortunately, as our bodies age, occasionally things start to wear down. This can be seen as similar to the way a car wears out and certain parts may need to be replaced. Unlike cars however, we obviously cannot just replace our internal organs, but there are usually ways to deal with whatever problem may come along.

Erectile dysfunction can have several causes. These causes can be either physical, psychological, both or occasionally can be caused by other problems. Among the common physical causes, forms of nerve damage and a reduction in blood flow are probably the most common. Often a man may experience reduced blood flow as he ages, which in turn can cause erectile dysfunction, simply because an erection requires a certain amount of blood to flow into the penis to achieve one.

Drugs, usually prescription drugs, can cause or at least contribute somewhat to impotence or erectile dysfunction. These include certain medications for high blood pressure, sedatives or tranquilizers, some antidepressants and certain heart medications. These can all affect a man's ability to achieve and maintain an erection. In addition, occasionally long term abuse of alcohol or illegal drugs can also cause erectile dysfunction.

Vascular disease, otherwise known as arteriosclerosis, can also cause erectile dysfunction. This disease causes the arteries to harden and narrow, which causes the blood flow to lessen within the body. An obvious result of this would be lack of blood flow to the penis, which, as we know, causes an inability to achieve an erection. Arteriosclerosis is usually associated most with age however, and for the most part, men with the disease are usually over 60.

Psychological conditions that cause erectile dysfunction can sometimes be hard to pinpoint, let alone treat. These conditions can be guilt, worrying, stress, anxiety and depression. It is possible that these can all be intertwined with each other and the result may be something as drastic as the inability to achieve an erection. This can start a vicious cycle, since the first time it happens can lead to even more stress, worry and anxiety, which can lead to yet another erectile problem. If this cycle repeats itself too often, it could lead to erectile dysfunction. It is not common for psychological problems to be the main cause of erectile dysfunction, but they can magnify the other physical problems that may be present as well.

One of the most popular remedies today is an oral medication such as Viagra. The underlying concept of how Viagra works is fairly simple. Viagra helps relax certain muscles in the penis and also increases the blood flow to the penis, which can help achieve an erection. It is important to remember that Viagra only helps the ability to achieve an erection, and some form of stimulation of the penis is still needed to actually achieve a full blown erection. Another item to keep in mind is that Viagra usually will only last for four hours at the most, and usually requires around 30 minutes for it to take full effect. So some advance planning will probably be needed to a certain degree.

Even though Viagra can be a wonder drug for many men, and will work for most, it is always advisable to keep in contact with your doctor and follow their recommendations. Viagra can cause certain side effects, but most are fairly unremarkable, and often will lessen with time. Certain side effects can be a problem however and might require medical attention. If a patient is taking certain heart medications for example, there can be very serious problems that may require medical attention. Another problem that some may experience is called priapism. Priapism is generally defined as an erection lasting more than four hours, and usually requires medical treatment.

Determining the reason behind the erectile dysfunction is vital to proper, effective treatment. Regardless of which treatment you decide on, it is very important to talk with your doctor and do as much research as possible on your own. After finding as much information as possible, you will be better informed and be able to ask your doctor the right questions and be active in finding a solution that is right for you.
