How to Shop for Computer Memory

By: Mel C

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to run a program without enough memory. Once your computer memory gets as slow as old treacle, it is surely time to upgrade. Computer memory is called RAM, short for random access memory. Your computer also has a hard drive that is a memory system, but it takes the computer longer to access it. By using the RAM, things flow along a lot faster, but once the computer is switched off, the RAM loses all its data. Not to worry, it should all be stored in the hard drive - at least if you clicked Save.

RAM takes care of all the current stuff you are doing, while the hard drive holds it for future use. Think of the RAM as being the table you work on, while the hard drive is your filing cabinet. Since most of us want our computers to work quickly, it is imperative that both of these memory parts work well. If you need to upgrade, then make sure the RAM you get is compatible with your motherboard. Each type of RAM has its own speed and your motherboards must be able to support it. If you mix your RAM speeds, then you will find that the motherboard would slow the fast one down to work in line with the slowest. Sure, it works, but not as fast as you thought it would.
