Industrial Lubricants and Additives

By: Michael Braganza

Industrial lubricants are substances used in automotive, metalworking industry and other machineries to reduce friction and wear between moving metal surfaces. Lubricants are of different types and used for different purposes. But the main objective to use industrial lubricant is same i.e. to reduce friction and wear between two moving metal parts in machinery. For example, we use greases in our cycles, motor cycles, and other machinery. These greases are also type of lubricants. We often use gear oils in our bike gear systems or gear boxes. These oils are also type of lubricants. Proper use of lubricants ensures you smooth running of your machinery and provider longer life of your machinery. But improper use of lubricant can give you unscheduled maintenance and make you in financial crisis.

Industrial lubricants can be generally classifies into two categories – refined lubricants and synthetic lubricants. Refined lubricants are generally produces from mineral oils or crude oils and synthetic lubricants are manufactured by the process of synthesis of chemical compounds. There are several applications of industrial lubricants now-a-days in automotive, automobiles, marine, and metalworking industries. Marine oils, turbine oils, hydraulic oils, metalworking oils, engine oils, etc are some major applications of industrial lubricants. One of the biggest applications of lubricants is motor oils. Motor oils are also termed as engine oils. They are use in engines of car, motor cycle, agricultural engines, etc to protect internal combustion engine and powered equipments.

The primary function of motor or engine oils is to reduce friction between moving parts by lubricating them. But they also performs some other functions such as reducing heat, cleaning, preventing against rust & corrosion, cooling the engine, etc. Using the right engine oils ensures your vehicles or machinery smooth running and provides better protection and longer life. Now-a-days, synthetic motor oils are in vogue and used to lubricate in spite of conventional motor oils. Synthetic lubricants or oils are more expensive at purchase but they provide better performance rather than traditional lubricants or motor oils.

Synthetic motor or engine oils are specially manufactured from chemical compounds using some additive for the better performance. Some of these additives are anti-wear agents, oxidation inhibitors, anti-foam agents, viscosity index improvers, rust & corrosion inhibitors, Pour point depressants, etc. The major feature of synthetic motor oils or synthetic lubricants is their viscosity. Traditional motor oils have tendency to go thicker in cold season and thinner at high engine temperature. But synthetic industrial lubricants maintain their viscosity at different temperature levels. Thus, we see that industrial lubricants have big use in automobile, automotive, and metalworking industries.
