Review Of Xbox's "Mass Effect" On My HDTV

By: Jeff Smith

If you are a person that enjoys role playing games "Mass Effect" is a must have.  It might look familiar to some people if they have played the Star Wars "Knights of The Old Republic" games. Like that game, your going to go through a lot of talking.  Now some people might not like that but this game probably does it the best out of any game.

Every character in "Mass Effect" has a completely detailed back ground.  It is a lot of fun just hanging around your ship and talking with the crew to see how they are.  A thing I have to mention is the visuals in this game.  Of course it looks the best in HD so if you have a HDTV go ahead and put it in that.  If you don’t, well then you need to go buy a HDTV!  There are many different classes to choose from.  Such as soldiers which are skilled in using weapons.

There are also classes that specialize in using the biotech abilities such as throwing your opponents up against walls or lifting them up in the air while you shoot them.  As you might all ready know this game has a great story in it.  It is about a rogue specter that is trying to bring back an apocalyptic race called the Reavers that will destroy everything in the galaxy.  So you set off to try and find him and stop him.  The facial features especially in the game are spectacular.  As I have said before the game looks best viewed on a HDTV so that you can see all of the little details in the game.

As in KOTOR the fighting mechanic is still relatively the same.  You can pause the game at any time so that you can make a plan and tell your team what to do.  Also throughout the game you gain team mates through completing missions.  You can also complete the missions at different times so that means you can get different team mates at different times.  "Mass Effect" has very non linear game play which makes the replay value great.  There is a bunch of different choices you can make throughout the game.  Such as decisions when you are speaking to people.

You will not get bored either on the way the game looks.  Every planet has a unique look to it.  But you wont get the full experience out of it unless you are playing it via a HDTV.  However there are some slight irritants with the game.  One of those is when you get to drive around in the vehicle.  The vehicle it self is hard to control.  Its kind of like Halo but plays slightly different.  You could be telling it to go forward and then you turn the camera at the same time to look at something on your right, then all of the sudden forward equals backwards.  So you can see how that could be frustrating.

Although once you learn how to control the vehicle it can be kind of fun.  If you press "A" rocket boosters make the vehicle jump up in the air.  You can use that to dodge enemy fire or get over obstacles or just has some plain old fun. With saying all of this, the game is still completely fun and you will want to probably play through it multiple times.
