Sega’s Dreamcast

By: Werner Frisch

Sega Dreamcast was the sixth generation video game console developed by Sega a Japanese company. During its development period it was known by the code names such as: white belt, black belt, dural, dricas, vortex etc. Sega Dreamcast is the heir to Sega Saturn. The main objective behind the development of Sega Dreamcast was to capture the console market and by introducing this console, Sega wanted to supersede the playstation of Sony entertainment and Nintendo-64 of Nintendo. Sega Dreamcast was originally released on November 27, 1998 but it was available to America in September, 1999 and to Europe in October, 1999.

Sega Dreamcast became the first ever video game console in which modem and internet facilities were included. It had a built in modem, so Sega Dreamcast could be used with internet to play the games online. However the earlier video game consoles of Sega had the internet facilities but they had many limitations too. They required additional components and hardware. Sega Dreamcast has been a big hit through out the world. More than ten millions kits have been sold. In United States alone, the sale was over five lac units in just two weeks. The sale of Sega Dreamcast was that high and demand was more than the sale, due to this Sega failed to complete the orders which it took in advance.

Sony’s playstation-2, Microsoft’s Xbox, and Nintendo’s GameCube were the big competitors of Sega’s Dreamcast. Out of these playstation -2 had an advantage over Sega’s Dreamcast that playstation 2 was capable of playing the DVD video which Sega’s Dreamcast did not have. This could be the main factor which was responsible for the end of Sega’s Dreamcast in Japan. Initially Sega found it difficult to launch its console “Dreamcast” outside of United State because Sega did not get any company which could promote “dreamcast”. And also the product did not get the good marketing in European countries. Finally third party companies were enlisted to promote “Dreamcast”. However, there also the money factor came in between as the companies promoting Sega’s Dreamcast were not paid the right amount of money. Sega did not released many of the major titles or games outside the Japan and finally, on January 31, 2001 the announcement was made by Sega that there would not be any production of “Dreamcast” from March of that year. And in 2001, the production of Sega’s Dreamcast was officially discontinued. After few years, Sega again launched “dreamcast”. In February, 2006 “Dreamcast” was being sold through online.

The hardware of Sega’s Dreamcast include: Sega’s Dreamcast come with white or grey plastic bodies. Jewel cases to sell the games, a video cable to support composite video and stereo sound, s-video cable and a radio frequency connector, and a VGA connector. However, there is no key is available on the Sega’s Dreamcast panel to reset the game. But the player can reset the game just by pressing all the four keys available on the panel together along with the start key. By doing this the player will enter into the main menu from where player can reset the game. If the player again presses all the four keys together along with the start key, then it will resume the game.
