Symptoms of Waterborne Illnesses and Prevention Methods

By: Mel C

In third-world countries waterborne diseases are a major cause of death. Where water is properly treated, it is rare for people to get any disease from drinking it. However, when people - especially children - swim in lakes and rivers they often ingest the water and are at risk of taking in certain diseases with it.

The diseases from poor quality water can cause symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea, fever, cramps and discomfort in the stomach, and also fatigue and weight loss. In those people who are in the high-risk group of elderly, infants and those whose immune system in compromised, these diseases can lead to death. Diseases are caused by bacteria, (cholera and typhoid); virus (hepatitis, polio or gastro diseases);or protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium).

In most cases bacterial and protozoal diseases are successfully treated by the right medication such as antibiotics or anti-protozoal drugs. In the case of viral infections, treatment is for the symptoms rather than the cause, which will generally get better by itself.

Prevention includes washing hands after going to the toilet and handling pets, washing edibles in clean water, avoiding unpastuerised milk and dairy. If camping, take bottled water or boil what you collect from natural sources. Clean the nappy-change area after every use.
