Taking Care of Your Veneers

By: Mel C

Porcelain veneers are covers over the surface of teeth for cosmetic or health reasons. They should last ten or more years, but if you don't take good care of them, they may chip or fall off. Veneers are a thin film of porcelain stuck onto the tooth with special cement. While the dentist will take good care to end this cement and porcelain right at the gum line, if your gums recede due to gingivitis, then the top edge of cement will show and it is often stained from the food and liquids that are ingested, or from smoking.

Excess coffee, tea, colas red wine, or tobacco products can stain this cement, though the porcelain itself doesn't stain. To take good care of your veneers, you should limit exposure to those substances and also avoid clenching or grinding the teeth, or chewing on hard things like ice, bones, fingernails or pins. A mouthguard should be worn during sporting events, and if you grind your teeth at night, your dentist can make a soft plastic mouthguard for you to wear. With persistence, you will adjust to wearing it and save your veneers.

It's important that your home oral care be taken seriously. Flossing and brushing with a soft brush is necessary. Use fluoride toothpaste that is non-abrasive.
