Since the time of the Industrial Revolution, there have been continued evolutions to the world of business. Work conditions for the modern employee are more and more specialized, restricted, and detached. In spite of the fact of modern technology's ability to maximize human productivity, continuing success in business will require more human interaction and cooperation.
For effective communication, people need not necessarily be in the same place, though there is nothing to replace personal physical interaction for building good relationships and team bonding. Humans become more than just mere impersonal names on email distribution lists. They become a team which is working towards achieving a common goal in the work place. Employees become more active and cohesive to accomplish shared goals.
In order to stay competitive and adapt to quickly changing market conditions in the modern business world, intelligent businesses will take advantage of internal and external team building opportunities to improve collaboration of employees. These people need to be able to comfortably work together, so that they can be united in direction and goals and keep the company on an effective, directive path.
During the growth of a company things becomes more complex. There are many businesses that have looked to pioneering settlers, and the military throughout history for their inspiration. Seeing that people faced logistical and physical changes built quick bonds, developing problem-solving abilities that are critical to a team. Thus people become more motivated to strive for group success.
These models have been used to create team building exercises to help companies improve. For examples, one such method involves dividing participants into teams with 8-12 members each, and challenging each team with the threats that existed during the days of migration in covered wagons in the Old West.
Every team should design and build a closed wagon as specified in the technical specification. All the teams can buy the necessary supplies required to build the wagon from the budget allotted to them. They also work together to create there own team flag and camp song. Once the teams have completed constructing there wagon they should compete in a race using it.
While doing so, team members must practice communicating, risk taking, exercising leadership, and working in tandem. They all get to practice problem solving in a group setting. People get a safe opportunity to learn to trust their teammates as they define roles and responsibilities to accomplish group challenges. The accompanying adrenaline rush from the exertion and novelty of testing physical limits in that manner is also chemically conducive to feelings of group camaraderie.
Team building events are effective because they require the team members to overcome their fears and self-imposed obstacles by making them do things they wouldn't do on their own. The result is that the people involved have fun in a controlled environment and form cohesive and hopefully efficacious project teams. The cohesion that results will help the team both working within the company and when communicating with external groups, such as other companies. Improving employees' motivation and aligning their goals will result in better results for the whole company.
