Executive Summary
The Sector At A Glance
Key Insights On The Telecomunications Sector of the Caribbean
As a part of It's ongoing analysis of some of the world's most exciting telecoms growth opportunities, It's new Caribbean Telecommunications Report examines 10 different markets and assesses the growth potential. Reflecting the generally low level of fixed-line penetration rates throughout much of the Caribbean – as well as evidence that the demand for fixed-line services is already in decline – the report focuses predominantly on the mobile market, which is currently the main driver of growth in the region's communications services.
Mobile communications services have seen impressive growth in the Caribbean in recent months, especially in countries such as Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, where penetration has risen from around 40% in 2003 to more than 80% at present. Jamaica stands out with a penetration rate that already exceeds 100%. Mobile growth in Jamaica has been assisted by the country's low level of fixedline penetration, but also by the strong competition within the market. Low fixed-line penetration levels have also boosted mobile growth in Haiti, particularly since competition became more intense in mid- 2006. Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, Cuba's mobile market stands out with its low level of both fixed and mobile penetration.
The high growth in mobile services throughout most of the Caribbean has already attracted the attention of a number of international investors, some of which have been responsible for driving individual market growth trends. The report profiles two of the most important operators in the Caribbean, namely Cable & Wireless (C&W) and Digicel. Both companies have their origins in Europe and both have expanded their businesses in the region to the extent that they can rightly be called 'pan-regional' providers. However, while the presence of C&W in the region has a long history, and is generally associated with the historical legacies of the British Caribbean Empire, Digicel, under the ownership of Irish entrepreneur Denis O'Brien, established its first foothold in the region only in 2000.
Through a process of acquiring mobile licences as well as established mobile operators, Digicel has expanded its Caribbean business and currently operates in 22 markets. Despite the strong presence of C&W and Digicel, numerous other telecoms operators and investors have made their mark in recent months, including Mexico's América Móvil, through its acquisition of Verizon's businesses in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic in 2006. Other major operators with a notable presence in the region include France Telecom, with its operations in Guadeloupe, Martinique and the Dominican Republic, and Telecom Italia, which owns 27% of Cuban incumbent telco, ETECSA. In the Business Environment Rankings section of this report, It has identified several opportunities for further investment in the Caribbean telecoms sectors, not least in the upcoming privatisation of BTC Bahamas and the possible future privatisation of Telecommunications D'Haiti.
