Granite is an igneous or ‘fire’ rock. It is formed underground when magma becomes trapped in pockets below the Earth’s crust and then slowly cools over a long period of time. This takes place under extreme pressure leading to the formation of this crystalline rock. It has a rough, coarse texture and is commonly found above ground in the form of tors and outcrops (bedrock appearing above the ground in a weathered state). It is found all over the world but the granite that is used for commercial use is mainly found in Finland, Norway, and Sweden. It has been widely used throughout history in building such things as pyramids and sarcophagus by the ancient Egyptians to Roman granite baths. It has also been used in all manors of buildings and construction right up to modern day.
