Using Recycled Water Safely

By: Mel C

Recycled water seems to have been the source of quite a bit of controversy over the last few years. To guard your health, never drink recycled water, or use it in places where it may be ingested, such as in children's swimming pools. Children should never be allowed to play with recycled water. While health risk is quite low for healthy individuals, those people who have a depressed immune system, such as dialysis patients are more likely to be badly affected.

Be sure to wash your hands after using recycled water and if you use it in the garden, then washing your hands after working in the garden is a good idea. But most people do this as a matter of course, anyway. Make sure all open cuts are covered before gardening, when using recycled water. If you use recycled water on the lawn, then don't allow the children to play there while it is wet.

While pets seem to drink water from all sources without harm, it's best to give your pet a water supply that is not recycled. This will ensure that no germs are passed from pet to owner. It is important to inform all visitors that you use recycled water. This will enable them to make their own choices in regards to using it.
