What is Bruxism?

By: Mel C

Never heard of it? While it sounds rather horrible it's nothing more than the grinding or clenching of teeth during the night while a child is asleep or under stress. While most kids outgrow this condition without any harm, in a few cases it may cause problems. If your child complains of a sore jaw or face in the morning, it could be a sign of Bruxism.

It can cause the tooth enamel to wear down or be chipped, where a dental crown or veneers may be necessary. It may cause mild headaches in the morning - if done during the night. Misaligned teeth may cause bruxism, so it's important to take a teeth-grinding child to the dentist for regular check-ups. If the teeth are not misaligned and show no sign of damage due to the grinding, then its time to start asking questions for find out if the problem is psychological.

Nervous tension or anger can both cause Bruxism. If your child chews on nails or pencils, sucks his thumb, or chews on the inside of his cheek, he may be feeling stressed. These problems may be overcome quite easily by helping the child relax before bedtime. A bubble bath, listening to quiet music or reading a book may do the trick.
