Wisdom Tooth Removal Aftercare

By: Mel C

No one likes having teeth out, but sometimes it is necessary. After an extraction there are some things to do that will help your gum to heal without problems. Firstly, a blood clot needs to form over the wound site to protect the nerve endings and aid in the healing process. This will usually happen naturally, so to make sure you don't dislodge the clot, never rinse your mouth out in the first 24 hours after the extraction.

While painkillers will be necessary, don't take Aspirin - that makes blood thin and prevents clotting. Take your painkillers immediately; don't wait until the pain is really bad. After a tooth extraction you need to take it easy for a while, so don't plan on cleaning the house of getting out in the garden afterwards. You will have a gauze pad in your mouth to help stop the bleeding; keeping a firm pressure on it is necessary. It can be changed every 30-45 minutes and if the bleeding doesn't seem to be stopping, then replace it with a moistened teabag. The tannic acid in the tea will help to stop it.

After the first 24 hours have passed, you can rinse gently with warm salty water. Do it 3-4 times a day after meals. Don't spit with force or the clot may dislodge. Eat mushy foods for the first few days and don't lift heavy weights or do workouts.
